Chrome For Mac Os X

I have a 12' Alu pb that I bought with a broken screen (dont spill sprite on laptop screens guys!)
The machine has worked fine for a couple of months but I really want to reformat and install my own version of Panther Server. Trouble is, the boot screen defaults to using the laptop screen, which is damaged to the point where i cant make it out. Is there any way to force the use of an external monitor during installation? Either that, or could it be done 'blind' using keypresses? I've not installed any Mac OS frequently enough to know the screens without seeing them so if anyone has any advice on persuing that route then it would be helpful as a last resort.
Thanks in advance.
